Diving Schools
Diving schools are places you can go to learn the basics
of scuba diving. Many states require that a prospective diver attend
enough classes to be able to pass an exam that features both a written
and skills portion. Those that complete the test are accredited divers.
It’s similar to the process for learning to drive.
Diving schools are also the best place to learn how to
do technical diving. Technical diving is any type of diving that presents
special hazards beyond the norm for a diver. Some common hazards are
presented by enclosures (either caves or wrecks), by ice diving, and
by extremely deep diving. In the case of ice or an enclosure, it’s
impossible to directly ascend to the surface, which means a diver has
to be able to keep their head in case of emergency.
Extremely deep diving offers its own set of challenges.
For starters, past about 100 meters you cannot use a traditional diving
air mix, or you will succumb to nitrogen toxicity. That occurs when
the nitrogen enters the body at such a high pressure that it can begin
to interfere with the normal cell functions such as respiration or combustion.
A diving school will teach you how to switch air sources mid-dive to
avoid this problem.
